DPF Filters

Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF) are devices that are present in the exhaust system of diesel-powered vehicles. They capture and trap the harmful particulate matter and soot emitted from exhaust gases before they are released into the atmosphere. The trapped particles are periodically burned off in a process called regeneration, which converts the soot into ash and carbon dioxide. DPF filters are essential to reducing diesel emissions and improving air quality, as diesel particulate matter has been linked to respiratory and cardiovascular health issues.

DPF warning lights indicate that the diesel particulate filter (DPF) in a vehicle's exhaust system is becoming blocked with soot and needs cleaning. If the warning light is ignored, the filter could become completely blocked, leading to decreased performance, reduced fuel efficiency, and potentially costly repairs. It is important to have the DPF system checked and cleaned as instructed in the vehicle's owner manual. In some cases, the warning light may also indicate a malfunction in the DPF system, and a diagnostic test may be required to determine the cause of the issue.

Why does my DPF get blocked?

This can occur when the vehicle is driven at low speeds or frequently starts and stops, as the engine may not always reach the necessary temperature to burn off the soot and debris in the filter. Additionally, if the engine is not properly maintained and serviced, it can produce excess soot and debris that can accumulate in the DPF filter, causing it to become blocked. The use of low-quality fuel or inadequate maintenance of the fuel injection system can also contribute to blocked DPF filters.

How can I fix it?

It is best to take your vehicle to a certified mechanic or dealership to have the DPF filter inspected and repaired. Regular maintenance such as engine oil and filter changes, fuel filter changes, and proper driving techniques can also help prevent damage to the DPF filter. Using quality diesel fuel and avoiding short trips can also help prolong the life of the DPF filter. If the DPF filter is severely damaged, it may need to be replaced.

What do I do if the light stays on?

If the DPF warning light stays on, it’s time to give us a call. We will be able to diagnose the problem, get your car running properly and give you advice to prevent it happening again.
